The commercial model of publishing, the sales-based model of publishing, is not inevitable or necessary…. That assumes that the commercial publishing industry are the people who know academic publishing. That’s only been true since the 1960s and 70s. And what I would like to know where the voices of the learned societies and scholarly communities are in that, since they were historical the ones who knew about scholarly publishing and communication.
